There are 3 main arguments raised about the validity of graphology:

  1. That there is no real difference between writings, they are all formed according to text book patterns learnt at school.
  2. Everybody’s handwriting changes even during a single day according to their mood so how can their basic character be revealed?
  3. Handwriting is produced by the movement of the hand only. Therefore, differences in handwriting can only reveal skill, routine or deficiencies of the hand, but can tell nothing of the writer’s character.

I’ll answer these in order:

  1. That there is no real difference between writings, they are all formed according to text book patterns learnt at school. If anyone is in contact with a former class mate all they have to do is compare their writing and this point will be disproved.
  2. Everybody’s handwriting changes even during a single day according to their mood so how can their basic character be revealed? The changing elements are only a small proportion of the writing eg. slant and size. Only when the character of the writer undergoes a real change does the writing change. Experiments in hypnosis have confirmed this statement. When the hypnotised person is asked to assume the personality of another character, their handwriting changes immediately. It takes on the characteristics and personality that the person thinks that they now have. If a timid person is told under hypnosis that they are a tyrant, their handwriting will take on the elements of what they imagine a tyrant is. The change springs from their brain and imagination and not from their hand.
  3. Handwriting is produced by the movement of the hand only. Therefore, differences in handwriting can only reveal skill, routine or deficiencies of the hand, but can tell nothing of the writer’s character. The example of hypnotic influence disproves this statement, but there are other experiments which have proved that the general features of handwriting remain the same whether a person writes with his hand, with his foot or any other way.  The writing is less skilled, but to the trained eye it reveals the same unmistakable and characteristic details and tendencies. An interesting case occurred in Germany in the 1940s. A farmer was living on bad terms with his neighbour. To offend him he deliberately sowed seeds on his neighbour’s field in the form of libellous words. The seeds grew to plants in the exact pattern of the offender’s handwriting. The court accepted this as evidence and legal proof of the offender’s identity, and he was convicted.
